North York Moors 100

Sunday 28th May

Simon Pipe knocked nearly six hours off his best time for the annual Long Distance Walkers' Association 100-mile challenge over the late May bank holiday, and more than ten hours off his 2016 time. He completed the North York Moors 100 in 34:42 and was 94th fastest finisher, out of a field of 492 starters and 340 finishers. This was Simon's fifth consecutive LDWA 100 and the first on which he has tried running some of the route. Conclusion: running makes it much easier! Only five more to go and he gets a badge.

Banbury Triathlon

Sunday 21st May

Another weekend, another traithlon debut! This time David Bannister decided to "take the plunge" and give triathlon a go. He took on the super sprint event in Banbury, consisting of a 400 metre swim in the Woodgreen 50m outdoor pool, a 20km cycle (Quote: "horribly hilly!") and a 5km out and back run.

David finished 3rd in age group, and 9th overall! Not bad for a first go! (smug mode enabled!)

Club Road Half Marathon

Sunday 21st May

The annual road half marathon for club members was again kindly organised by John Weaver this year. A few less running this year due to various holidays, other events, injuries, and the like, but it was still taken on on a warm morning by 9 Harriers. The idea is to pick a start time and aim to finish as close to midday as possible! It's always a fun and relaxed affair, often (if there are a few Harriers free to help) with a pitstop at halfway for a few drinks and nibbles!

Often runners go out in groups and it's as much a social event as anything. Congratulations this year go to Donna and Simon for finishing just 49 seconds before midday. Results are below, showing the finish time, running time and name

11:43:04  1:57:04  Anwen Greenaway

11:43:04  1:57:04  Hannah Rogan

Firkin 5

Saturday 20th May

The Hook Norton Brewery presented the inaugural Firkin 5 fun run on Saturday afternoon with considerable help from Hook Norton Harriers. Much of the praise for a very successful first event must go to Anwen Greenaway who held the brewery's hand throughout the process and did a large amount of the organising before the event and on the day. Lots of Harriers turned up to time keep, handle results and to marshal the tough, muddy and slippery off road course, and quite a few also ran it!

Well done everyone on a great event which can hopefully be included in part of a series of events supported by the Brewery and Hook Norton Harriers in the future, including our own races.

Chase the Sun 10k

It was more like chase the rain clouds at Olympic Park in London, but Anwen managed to dodge them (well, some of them) to finish this 10k. Well done Anwen!

Sunday 14th May

A new experience for Paul Taylor this Sunday, taking on his first triathlon. This was a sprint tri combining a 400m pool swim, a 23km cycle and a 5km run. Paul had a fantastic race. I think he quite enjoyed it!

Anwen and Hannah headed down to Henley to run in their off road races. Congratulation to both of them for excellent results. Hannah raced her way to winning the 10k, and Anwen finished as 8th lady and 4th in age group in the half marathon! Fantastic Harrier performances!

Four Farms Challenge, Deddington

Sunday 14th May

Two Harriers ran at this years local Four Farms Challenge in Deddington. There is a 5k and a 10k to choose from, and both Graeme and Jo ran the 10k. This was Graeme's first race back after a long spell out with a knee injury and then surgery, so well done for getting back in the swing of things Graeme. This is also not a race to be under estimated! It's tough. Tricky terraine and quite hilly, and it was a hot day (which certainly doesn't help, especially with a recent outbreak of Blandford flies in the areas. Nasty critters!).

1:05:40  Graeme Hackland

1:15:38  Jo Woodbridge

Full results can be found here.

Oxford Town & Gown 10k

Sunday 14th May

A good turn out from the Harriers for the 36th Oxford Town & Gown this year. It was a big race (over 4000 runners) and struggled with the numbers in places, with some having to walk down the back streets of Oxford where it narrowed and there just wasn't enough room. So, not really a PB race, but some fantastic running from everyone on a really warm day in a beautiful location. Well done everyone.

Shakespeare Marathon and Half Marathon

Sunday 7th May

A good turn out from the Harriers at the Stratford-upon-Avon Shakespeare marathon and half marathon this year, with Dave and Darren taking on the marathon (despite a distinct lack of training and recent injuries!) and David, Donna, Simon, Kat, Julian and Cheri running the half marathon. It was a surprisingly warm day in the end and I think everyone struggled a bit with the heat. Despite that it was a great set of results, and Donna finished third Senior Female! Congratulations to Kat as well, running her first half marathon!

Ox Half Marathon

Sunday 7th May

Simon and Lisa Preston travelled down to Dorset for another White Star running event. This was a monster of a race, with nearly 500 metres of ascent. Great work by both of them to complete this tough race.

Silverstone 10k

Tuesday 2nd May

A gaggle (yes, a gaggle!) of Harriers headed over to the Silverstone race circuit to enter Silson AC's 10k race. The race is part in the club championships and is also part of the East Midlands Grand Prix. It was, as expected, windy, and by the end of the evening it was pretty cold, but some fantastic running saw PB's for Tom, Martyn, Kat and Lisa and great results for everyone else. It was a lovely get together for the club. Apparently there were also some nice cars to see (if you managed to actually look up and see them!)

38:43  David Bannister

39:46  Tom Footitt (PB)

41:11  Danny Phillips

Milton Keynes Half Marathon

Monday 1st May

Three Harriers made their way over to Milton Keynes to take on the half marathon in this mini festival of running. The race takes in a mixture of road and park around Milton Keynes and finishes with a lap inside Stadium MK. There was excellent support on the run and in the stadium at the finish.

Great runs from Sam Rees and Darren Cox both coming back from injury and illness, and a PB from David Bannister, finishing 14th overall and 2nd in Age Category. I can quote him as saying he felt "a bit smug" after this one!

1:24:44  David Bannister (PB)

1:38:07  Darren Cox

1:43:30  Sam Rees
