Oxon XC Series 2018-2019

Race 5 - Henley Showground, Greenlands

March 3rd 2019

Once again David Bannister submits a report for the final round of the '18/'19 XC season:

The final round of the Oxford Mail cross country league took place just outside Henley-on-Thames. I think there was a general assumption that this would be a fairly flat and uninteresting course around the show ground, but how wrong we were! It was an outstanding, and really quite brutal course. Very hilly with lots of steep ups, lots of steep downs and seemingly even more steep sides of hills to negotiate! What an amazing course!

Despite the fairly dismal weather (rain and blustery wind trying to flatten the tent!) we had a fairly good turn out for the last fixture, with the mens team fighting against relegation from Division 2 and the ladies chasing promotion out of Division 3! You'll be pleased to know we were successful in both, with 8 men turning out and 6 ladies to make up two teams. Bryan very kindly filled our marshal spot for the duration, and was in good position to see lots of runners falling over on a sharp bend at the bottom of a particularly steep hill! Thanks Bryan.

We even had guests this week. Cherwell Runners & Joggers unfortunately forgot their tent pegs, so were sharing our tent, along with a few members of Bicester Tri. It all makes for another fantastic team atmosphere.

Congratulations go to everyone who raced this season. Well done to the Men for surviving relegation after last years promotion to Division 2, and also to the ladies for gaining promotion up of Division 2! Individual accolades go to Tom Bradford for finishing 8th in the V40 mens section, and Donna Allen for finishing 5th overall in the Senior Ladies section.

So, we all wait for next years XC fixtures to come around. If you're not tried XC yet please come and give it a go. It's one of the best team events of the year. Until next season...

Race 3 - Horspath Stadium, Oxford

January 6th 2019

Thanks once again to David Bannister for this report:

Round 3 of the Oxford Mail Cross Country league was another return to a former venue at Horspath Stadium. The route was altered from previous years but still incorporated some tough hills (up and down) and fantastic paths through the woods. It was a packed venue as this meet included the 2019 Oxfordshire Cross Country County Championships. This always makes for very competitive races. We had a good turnout, with one mens team and two ladies teams completing the race. Thanks to Jo Taylor for marshaling for the club at this meet and to Rachel for dog-sitting and tea-making duties! Bad luck to Bryan who sustained a calf injury during the race and had to drop out. A warm welcome to Stephen and Emma on their first XC outings with the Harriers! We hope you enjoyed it. A big thank you goes to those who baked and brought cakes for everyone to tuck in to after the race! Awesome!!

Race 2 - Cirencester Park

December 2nd 2018

Thanks to David Bannister for the run report:

Round 2 of the Oxford Mail Cross Country league saw a very welcome return (after a few years) to Cirencester Park. This beautiful venue made for a fantastic, if brutal, cross country course with a couple of killer hills, not least the final hill and the finishing straight, uphill all the way! We're still missing quite a few signed up Harriers at these venues and I would urge anyone to come and try it. Please contact Anwen if you're not on the list and get signed up so you can enjoy it along with us all. We have a great time as a team, cheering and supporting each other, and Bethen's legendary cupcakes afterwards with a hot chocolate (or tea or coffee) are not to be missed!! (no pressure Bethan!!)

This months fixture saw 10 men and 4 ladies take on the tough course. Well done everyone who took part, in tricky conditions, and a big thank you to the host clubs, White Horse Harriers AC and Didcot Runners and all the volunteers who made it happen. Fantastic day!!
