The California International Marathon - 5th December 2021

The California International Marathon is an annual road marathon held in Northern California since 1983. The net downhill course starts at Folsom Dam and ends at the State Capitol in Sacramento.
Congratulations to Tony on a great result in 11 degrees centigrade (53 farenheit) temperature - chilly Tony?
Tony responds:
  • The start of the race was dark, foggy, cold, and wet, and the turning leaf colours reminded me of England in the autumn.
  • The race conditions were perfect, 11C with a slight tail wind. The first 8 miles were slightly downhill, followed by 8 miles of low rolling hills, and finally a straight run into the centre of Sacramento and the finish line.
  • My strategy was to run at about 7:50 pace, stay well hydrated and fed, and then pick up the pace at 21 miles if I felt good. Fortunately, I did feel good and was able to run the last 5 miles at 7:15 pace. Very happy with the result as I had trained for just 6 weeks and had done one long run because of an Achilles tendon injury.
  • I've already signed up for next year!
